Verification of Violence
Photography and videography is so prevalent now more than ever. They have both become mediums of communication for regular people. We collectively record our everyday lives and choose to share them with the world. Inevitably, along with this constant stream of photography, an increasing collection of violent images and videos takes shape. Although there are ways to minimize our exposure to such content, why are we so drawn to see them, even when we are given the choice not to?
When it comes to any content that people post online, I find myself drawn to them simply because I want an insight to unfamiliar experiences. Whether it be a casual $1000 shopping day for a millionaire, or a humble surfing day for a student in Hawaii, or a study session of an impossibly dedicated high schooler, photography and videography is constantly giving me something to strive for by allowing me to visualize the possibilities of my life. Similarly, violent content illustrates the despicable reality of society’s violent nature. When I hear or read about explicit violence that is seemingly too evil to be real, the presence of images proves that such events are not contained solely in Hollywood sets. Because of my hesitance to believe that brutal events are occurring to others, I am prompted to continue watching with intrigue, wonder, and fear. I marvel at it, and, each time, I am hit with the same shock that makes it impossible to peel my attention away. Overall, exposure to images capturing violence has given me a sense of reality and an understanding towards the taboo nature of humanity.
I really liked how you talked about the fact that we are attracted to certain things as they are things we don't experience. Also I totally agree with you when you talk about violence, I feel the same way as you, it makes me wonder if certain things like this are possible.

ReplyDeleteI love how you talked about the reasons why we are intrigued by photography - whether it's the casual Instagram post of violent images. I agree that photos give us an insight into reality or possible realities, proving their necessity to our society.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you wrote about this topic. I like how you explain why we are so intrigued into watching films like this, because we don’t experience these horrors in our lives.
