Due Monday? Do Monday

We are continuously being faced with temptations and habits that we understand are unhealthy, yet we often continue to indulge in them. One temptation that is often faced by students is procrastination. When students have endless assignments & projects, yet a limited amount of energy and time to complete all of them, they often push all of them off, not wanting to face the mountain that lies ahead. Although it’s widely understood as a harmful, self-sabotaging habit, it is still common. So why do we continue to procrastinate, even when we can so clearly visualize the consequences, some even experiencing it regularly. I believe it comes from our desire to prolong our peace as long as possible. As long as we aren’t actively struggling with the assignment and stressed with the possibility of mistakes, we believe we are happier, even though we have to go through it eventually. To us, at the very moment we choose to make our homework a problem for the future, our current happiness is more important than the imminent consequences and struggle. But when we look at our habit, most of us can collectively agree that it is not helping us. Our inability to fight this temptation is also strengthened by our self-comfort. We convince ourselves that there will definitely be time later, and that this two-hour TikTok scroll is a much-needed “break”. Overall, my inability to resist procrastination can be blamed on my subconscious decision to prioritize my current happiness over my future struggle, as well as my tendency to lie to myself to fuel this active ignorance.

  1. I agree, rather than thinking about the long run and the consequences that might come in the future we think about the immediate relief we can get from avoiding a task we have to do and rather doing something else we want to do

  2. I liked the idea that you brought up on how we continue to procrastinate as we only prioritize our current happiness. Most of the time, the work we get is time-consuming and stressful causing us to lack a certain empowerment to get our work done.
