Apple Vision Pro is a Car?

The Onion article I chose to read was titled, “Apple Reveals Vision Pro Has Been Autonomous Vehicle All Along”. This article seemingly discusses Apple’s new product and how it now doubles as a vehicle to “‘pile in the whole family and go for a spin’”. However, this article is also a parody that mocks new technology that seems to be almost too advanced, as well as the corporate ability to manipulate and capitalize off the public’s trust. In the article, CEO Tim Cook enthusiastically states that the Vision Pro, “‘starting at $3499, is the most affordable as well as the most cutting-edge car on the market’”. While, yes, it’s true that there aren’t many cars cheaper than that, this statement fails to acknowledge that the Vision Pro is simply not a car. We can all agree that a car being that cheap in this economy would be impossible, and this mocks the way companies attempt to sell items that are “too good to be true”, yet are always able to succeed. This article also mocks large corporate officers in various ways. For instance, Cook is said to be “zooming around the stage in figure eights” to demonstrate the mobility of the Vision Pro. This description created a very unserious image, especially with the word “zooming” which almost had a childish tone, signaling that the Vision Pro is like a toy for CEO Cook. This article conveys that some corporate officers are not to be taken seriously, especially with the things they are constantly selling. Overall, this article utilized various techniques to create a parody of new technology that is constantly improving to seemingly impossible levels, as well as corporate officers that aim to sell, sell, and sell.

  1. I really liked how you talked about how this article mocks large corporate officers. I thought it was clever to pick out the word “zooming”.
